Always the Audacious

Research

Since our founding in 1834 to combat the cholera and yellow fever epidemics then plaguing New Orleans, our mission has been one of improving our community and our world. Research is at the heart of that drive. Tulane is more committed than ever to further extending our research enterprise. Our sense of purpose is strong: to take the research we are performing on campus out into the community where it can make a difference. We will do this by increasing lab space, investing in our research faculty and growing those key areas of strength in which we are poised to stand as leaders, not just for Tulane and New Orleans, but for the world.

When you invest in research, you are changing the world. By giving today, you are helping to fuel tomorrow’s happier, healthier, safer and more just society. And there is no place better suited to embrace that tomorrow than Tulane.

Tulane has been a world leader in increasing our understanding of infectious diseases such as those caused by HIV and the Ebola and Zika viruses. The contributions of the Tulane National Research Primate Center, one of only seven such centers in the world, is central to that work. Our research extends well beyond the medical sciences to include the broader study of public health, the creative arts and the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences and engineering, social work, architecture, business and law. We have research centers that draw scholars from across campus, like the Tulane Brain Institute, the Center for Aging and the ByWater Institute. The breadth of our research is extraordinary and continually growing.

At Tulane, dedicated centers and units harness our unique strengths in interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together the intellectual power of faculty from across disciplines under the banner of timely and significant issues. These centers and institutes, cultivated in areas of strength where we have the opportunity to stand as a leader, offer the potential to attract additional research funding from federal, state, commercial and non-profit organizations — ultimately attracting further prestige to Tulane and demonstrating the university’s dynamism to potential faculty and students.

IMPACT RESEARCH FUNDS

We are meaningfully investing in and developing our downtown campus where research is the focal point. As we do so, the need to fund and support our research enterprise has never been greater — and the opportunities for discovery never more pressing. With flexible resources, scientists will be able to start studies more quickly, acquire the necessary lab equipment and amass the needed junior researchers, personnel and patients. Each dollar invested in support of our research has the potential to have a multiplier effect on our overall enterprise — driving increased revenue through federal, state, corporate and foundation funding.

STEVEN AND JANN PAUL HALL

One of the most ambitious capital projects in the history of the university, the Science and Engineering District at Tulane, begins with Steven and Jann Paul Hall. Paul Hall will provide Tulane with the ability to grow our research enterprise and provide lab space, office space, classroom space and facilities to support world-class science and engineering.

With Paul Hall, science and engineering professors can enjoy top-tier core equipment in a facility designed to foster interdisciplinary interaction along research themes and informal spaces that bring diverse groups of faculty and students together. Paul Hall will be a critical educational resource for students, supporting coursework and research for undergraduate and graduate students. With its array of spaces for research, learning and gathering, Paul Hall offers an ideal environment for promoting a holistic approach to educating our student-scientists and engineers.
